I hook and scraps of ww yarn like Red Heart
Ch 5, sl st tog to make a ring.
Round 1: Back Loops Only: Ch 3, 14 dc in ring. Sl st tog into the top of ch 3. (Count the ch 3 now and throughout as 1st dc)
Round 2: Back Loops Only: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around.
Round 3: Back Loops Only: Ch 3, dc in same st, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around. Sl st tog.
Round 4: Back Loops Only: Ch 3, dc in same st, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around. Sl st tog.
Round 5: Back Loops Only: Ch 3, dc in each st around. Sl st tog.
Round 6: Back Loops Only: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Sl st tog.
Round 7: Repeat Round 5.
Round 8: Repeat Round 6.
Round 9: Repeat Round 5.
Round 10: Repeat Round 6.
Round 11: Repeat Round 5.
Round 12: Repeat Round 6.
Round 13: Repeat Round 5.
Round 14: Repeat Round 6.
Round 15: Repeat Round 5.
Boy's hat version Round 16: Both Loops: ch 1, sc in each st around. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Girl's hat version Round 16: Both Loops: Sc in first st, *skip 2 sts, 7 dc (shell) in next st. Repeat from * around. Sl st tog. Fasten off and weave in ends.
